Is your career satisfying and moving in the right direction? The pandemic has caused many of us to re-evaluate what we really want for our lives and careers. Sorting through all of this is never easy, but set against our current global challenges and uncertainty, it is even harder. The world is experiencing unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety, which can make it difficult to think creatively, analyze alternatives and make decisions. Sometimes it is hard to sort out exactly what we need to change, and even if we do know, transitioning to something new can be scary.
If you are feeling stuck in your life or career, maybe it is time to do a little self-reflection. Take some time to consider what is most important to you. What are your core values? Financial security? Recognition? Flexibility? Family time? Personal growth? What do you stand for? Why are you here? What makes your life and career meaningful? Studies show that when people believe that their work matters, they’re four times more likely to be engaged, are more motivated, they learn faster, and are more fulfilled.
The Science of Purpose organization found that individuals who have a connection to their purpose have more successful careers, more fulfilling relationships (better sex lives too!) and improved health. At work they experience “increased levels of income, wealth, leadership effectiveness (+63%), fulfillment (+64%), learning (2x), engagement (4x), productivity (+175%)”. Their memory, cognition and mood are better and they are more content. Their cells and DNA are even stronger!
Do you have a clear idea of what your values and priorities are? Do you feel connected to a higher purpose? Do your life and career bring you joy? If not, spend a little time thinking about these questions. Once you are clear about what you want in your life, you can create a plan and move forward with more confidence. It may still take courage to take the leap, but isn’t it worth it?
